Tie One On For Safety During the Holiday Season
Because of the steep increase in drunk driving fatalities during the holiday season, MADD started its Tie One On For Safety project in 1986. The campaign is year round, but highlighted between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. This program enables people to show their commitment to eliminating drunk driving doing the following:
- Display a red ribbon in a visible location on your vehicle or vehicles. Red ribbons and red ribbon window decals are available through local MADD affiliates.
- Host parties responsibly. Offer plenty of non-alcoholic beverages and “mocktails”. Be prepared to provide alternate transportation or accommodations for guests who have been drinking.
- Be sure a sober driver is designated before drinking begins.
You can also Tie One On For Safety “virtually” by sharing a TOOFS button on online social networks. The buttons can be found on MADDS website at http://www.madd.org/blog/2012/december/tie-one-on-for-safety-2012.html.
